Sansepolcro is situated in the middle of a country, the Tuscan Valtiberina, from where you can reach the following towns in an hour by car: Assisi, Perugia, Gubbio, Siena , Arezzo, Cortona, La Verna, Camaldoli, San Marino, Rimini. Paola and Marco suggest you six itineraries leaving from Sansepolcro, that will let you know the art, the spirit and the culture which made this land famous in the world.

The artistic itinerary: Piero and his works

Start in visiting the “Museo Civico” of Sansepolcro to admire La Resurrezione, the Polittico della Misericordia and the San Giuliano. Inside the Museum there are many other works by other very famous painters. Not to far from here it exists the native house of Piero della Francesca. The attentive visitors can notice that the architectural aspects of the town inspired many works by Piero della Francesca. A sweet landscape take us to Monterchi, to visit the Madonna del Parto, and let us remember some particular aspects of the works by the artist. Now, you could go to Arezzo, and have a look to the Chiesa di San Francesco, inside of which there is La vera croce. The religious itinerary: San Francesco and his countries

The religious itinerary begins with the visit to the Eremo di Montecasale. The monastery was an old hermitage, given to San Francesco, who stayed there for long periods with his brethren. The panorama on the Afra’s valley is very enchanting, too. Then, you must continue for visiting the Eremo di Cerbaiolo, built in a very romantic place between Pieve S. Stefano and il Passo di Viamaggio. From here, reach Pieve S. Stefano again and go up to La Verna, one of the holiest land of the Christianity. Here, in 1224, San Francesco received the “ultimo sigillo” of stigmata. The mystic importance, the landscape, the works by Andrea Della Robbia and the Sasso Spicco make La Verna be one of the most fascinating and meditative destinations of this short tour around the Saint’s life.

Itinerary between Art and Story: the Land of Tuscan Valtiberina

The first stage of your journey must be certanily Anghiari, famous because of the battle of 1440 between Milanese and Florentine. Leonardo da Vinci painted it inside the Palazzo della Signoria in Florence: a work that nobody found and that scholars are still looking for.
The visit continues with the Museum of Palazzo Taglieschi and Palazzo Marzocco. Several panoramic elements put an end to the visit.
The next trip brings you to Caprese Michelangelo, the very famous town where Michelangelo Buonarroti was born. From this point you can go down to Città di Castello and visit Palazzo Vitelli, the Cannoniera, the Pinacoteca, with the works by Signorelli and Raffaello. The Cattedrale di San Florido of 1540 has a round roman belfry-tower (XII century) influenced by the art from Ravenna.
The Museo del Duomo, is very important because of the treasure of Canoscio: golden and silver dishes and vases. The Palazzo Albizzini was built during the XIVth century and it is the place where you can admire the Collezione Burri, one of the main artists of Modern Art, given to the town by the artist himself in 1982. His last present to Città di Castello was given in 1990 and the works stay now inside the Ex seccatoi di tabacco, a singular example to use an industrial building as a museum.
