Exploring the Valtiberina by bicycle means travelling at a gentle pace through countryside, small villages and natural landscapes shaped by the River Tiber. From Sansepolcro, you can join the network of cycle routes following the river south towards Umbria and Città di Castello.

The Municipality of Sansepolcro identifies the Tiber Cycle Route within its territory, running along the riverbanks and connecting southwards with routes reaching Città di Castello and continuing through the Upper Tiber Valley.

The itinerary gradually takes you away from the urban setting and into the valley landscape. The river becomes the thread connecting the journey, accompanied by riverside vegetation, fields and rural views typical of the border between Tuscany and Umbria.

Further into the Upper Tiber Valley, the cycle network covers different surfaces. Official Tiber cycle routes include paved stretches and long unpaved sections, some on dedicated tracks. A hybrid, gravel or mountain bike may therefore be a versatile choice for the different surfaces encountered along the way.

Heading towards Città di Castello also turns a simple ride into a full day of exploration. An official cycling itinerary promoted by Umbria Tourism connects Sansepolcro with Città di Castello over approximately 30 km, crossing the countryside between Tuscany and Umbria and largely following the unpaved cycle path beside the Tiber.

You do not, however, need to complete the entire route. You can adapt the experience to the time available and your level of fitness, choosing a stretch of the valley and returning towards Sansepolcro, or continuing to other towns in the Upper Tiber Valley.

Cycling along the Tiber is therefore a different way to discover the area: not simply a sporting activity, but a chance to observe the landscape, cross the countryside and appreciate the connection between Sansepolcro and the valley stretching into Umbria.
